The Many Uses of Bamboo

Bamboo is such a great natural resource that it may soon replace many wood and plastic products. It can grow in poor soil and with little water. Unlike trees and other plants, bamboo actually improves the ground that it lives in, adding nutrients back into the soil instead of leeching them out. It grows quickly, up to two feet a day, and creates an intricate network of roots that is excellent for erosion control.

Bamboo has a higher tensile strength than steel. It is very strong and perfectly suited for many things.

-People use it to build fences, houses, boats, furniture, and other structures that must hold up against the elements and subjection to heavy weights.

-Bamboo is used as a source of food in some cultures. The shoots are commonly used in soups and stir fries. The seeds are eaten as a source of whole grain. Bamboo is a good source of dietary fiber, protein, B vitamins, potassium, and other nutrients that should be consumed for optimal health.

-Bamboo cookware is very popular right now, but has actually been around for centuries. Bamboo is used to make toothpicks and chopsticks, rice steamers, utensils, plates, bowls, mats, trays, rice steamers, cutting boards, and more. It is preferred over wood for use in the kitchen because it absorbs very little moisture. This protects it from swelling, splitting or warping.

It is considered to be a good source of potassium, protein and fiber for diabetics who cannot have foods with high glucose content.

-Bamboo is very versatile as a raw product. It can be used to make fabric that rivals cotton in softness and wear. It can be used to make paper, scaffolding, paneling, structural reinforcers, even bridges. The fibers can be mixed with epoxy resin to produce incredibly strong, yet lightweight, building materials.

-Bamboo is used in our everyday lives. If you want to increase your use of bamboo in an effort to support budding communities that rely on bamboo as a source of income, or if you simply want to help the environment, there are a few ways in which you can start. Try to choose bamboo over plastic and wood products whenever possible. Think about your clothing hangers. Try bamboo clothes hangers. Bamboo is strong enough to hang heavy items, but more lightweight than traditional wooden hangers. Stock your kitchen with bamboo products. Opt for bamboo flooring over hardwood or laminate.

Some of the most popular garden layouts and designs utilize bamboo as the main theme. No one is sure where the trend originated but bamboo has been used in Asia as ornaments ever since the start of civilization. Homes have bamboo gates, bamboo furniture, bamboo fences and bamboo garden decoration. Over the past decades, landscape and interior design artists have been utilizing bamboo as part of their theme. What makes bamboo so great as a furniture or ornament?

One reason is bamboo is inexpensive. The raw material used for the creation of bamboo furniture is bamboo itself. It does not require any complex process or highly advance machine to be able to create a bamboo ornament. Every part of bamboo furniture is handcrafted making them intricate and unique. Thus, the creation of these bamboo ornaments is inexpensive and so, it is sold economically.

Another good attribute of bamboo is it is all-natural. The creation of bamboo gates, bamboo fences and bamboo furniture only involves cutting, smoothing and glazing. No harmful chemicals to our environment are used, making it a nature friendly product. As mentioned before, the raw materials itself is bamboo and this is a material that comes from nature itself. Thus, using bamboo in garden designs and ornaments is not detrimental to Mother Nature unlike other ornaments.

The area of the house that best suits bamboo designs and ornaments is the garden especially if the theme is a Japanese garden. The fence that will give you the border of your property can be made out of bamboo. Bamboo gates are also a good addition to match your fence. The water works can also be made out of bamboo, which is nice to look at and can greatly boost the beauty of the garden. It is also nice if you can put a bamboo bench in the garden. This would be a nice place to spend a summer afternoon with the family. The garden would look refreshing to the eyes of the viewer. This could give a very calming feeling to any that sees it.

The use of bamboo is not just limited to the garden. Take for example the bamboo gates, it can also be used to as the main gate of the house. There are types bamboo gates specifically designed for this purpose. They have reinforced frames to make them durable and last longer. For security purposes, the frame is reinforced with steel. However, the design and the body would still be bamboo. This is a nice design if you are planning to buy a new gate for your house. Another use of the bamboo is in the walls of your house. You can line it up with bamboo panels giving it a new look. There are also bamboo room dividers that you can use.

To sum it all, bamboo has many uses in the house. It is better because it is economical and nature friendly. Therefore, if you are planning to buy some new thing for the house or wants to renovate it, try to find out if there is bamboo product that you can use.

Bamboo is a remarkable material. Although it is very wood-like in appearance and texture, it is actually a form of grass that grows very tall, very quickly. Bamboo is traditionally used as a structural or decorative material, such as to create rugs and flooring. But I wanted to explore some of the more unusual uses for this material. As I have discovered, bamboo can be used for just about anything.

Bamboo is a popular choice for making musical instruments, especially flutes. Bamboo flutes can be traced back to ancient Egypt, from where they migrated to India, China, and Japan. But flutes are not the only kind of musical instrument that can be made from bamboo. Bamboo can also be used to make xylophones, drums, and chimes, among other things. Bamboo has a very pleasant resonant quality that makes it a fine material for musical instruments.

Bamboo is a popular material for fishing fly rods. Although it might seem intuitively that a single bamboo cane would become the rod of the pole, for professionally made fly rods this is not the case. In fact, the cane is split into strips, worked into specific angles, and then reassembled together, bound with a rod binding machine. The finished product looks smooth and professional, far removed from what the original bamboo cane looked like.

A company in China called HaPe International has released a line of toys made from bamboo, which the company claims is the world's first collection of bamboo toys. The line consists mostly of traditional style toys and games, such as Dominos, Castella, and a board game version of Sudoku.

Just like wood, bamboo can be used to make paper. This has been going on for hundreds of years. Paper can be made from bamboo cane pulp, which is what a commercial process would use, or from the sheaths from new bamboo canes. This second technique is a more informal technique that a person making his own paper might use. Commercial bamboo paper is not made in great quantities because of the economic and ecological expense. There are better uses for bamboo.

Possibly the most strange use for bamboo is in the construction of bicycles. If you think about it, it makes sense. Bamboo is strong, straight, rigid, and light - exactly what you need for the frame of a bicycle. There is a company in California called Calfee Design that makes a line of bamboo bikes. They are truly things to behold. The company claims that the bamboo provides amazing vibration damping - even better than carbon fiber. As would be expected, custom-crafted bikes like this are not cheap. Expect to pay $2 to $4 thousand for one.

Don't think for a minute that bicyclists have all the bamboo fun. There are a number of companies that make skate boards and surf boards out of bamboo. The bamboo in surf boards replaces fiberglass, resulting in a board that is lighter and stronger.

Finally, bamboo can be used to make fiber. This fiber can then be used to make any kind of clothing. You can literally wear bamboo, play bamboo, ride bamboo, eat bamboo, and live in a house made of bamboo. Given that bamboo grows very rapidly, it seems certain that in years to come this environmentally friendly material is only going to increase in popularity.

We have all seen it: pandas sitting in trees, chewing on long stalks of bamboo, carefree and happy. But Bamboo is fast becoming the eco-friendly alternative to many every day products. Between bamboo clothing, bed linens, and hardwood flooring, as well as bamboo furniture, utilizes this versatile grass.

Yes, you read that correctly. Grass! Bamboo is a grass, and a renewal resource. Bamboo is normally used for landscaping, to make a backyard more attractive and appealing to the homeowners. But bamboo has other uses as well. Soil erosion is a common problem with new construction sites around the world. Most industries have better management practices in place to avoid soil erosion on new construction sites, and bamboo is a great addition to new construction sites to avoid soil erosion.

Planting bamboo not only keeps soil erosion to a minimum; it can slow rain run off by creating a barrier for the rain to hit as it runs down an incline, either natural or man made. With over 1,200 varieties of bamboo in the world, there is clearly a bamboo alternative for every one of our daily needs.

Bamboo has been used for centuries in Asia, from a source of food to home construction, and it is only now that the western world is catching on to the source that Asia has hidden for centuries. Bamboo is as durable as any known wood used for building materials, but has a much shorter growth span. That is, it only takes weeks for bamboo to grow to lengths which can be utilized, whereas trees take decades. The quickness at which bamboo grows means that there is plenty of bamboo that can be made available for material use.

It also is a great addition to any yard or home. Since bamboo is a grass, which has leaves, it can help filter the air of toxins and breathe back out fresh clean oxygen for us to breath. Having bamboo in your house is not only considered good luck in Asian cultures, but it can keep the air you are breathing clean and fresh. It is also an attractive addition to your office or living room. Green is a stress reducing color, so having a deep green bamboo plant growing in the corner of your house can help you reduce your daily stress.

If you are sold on bamboo, there are plenty of products for which you can decorate your house or backyard patio with. There is bamboo furniture, bamboo wind chimes, and bamboo lanterns which you can add to your bamboo laden garden. Whether or not you want a bamboo awning, it can be found should you want one. Bamboo can be made into just about anything; you just need to use your imagination.

Just remember to keep your bamboo watered. Unlike most household plants, bamboo needs lots of water. That is unless you are trying to dry out your bamboo to make a home made fishing pole! Then dry it out, get your bobbin and go fishing.
