Lucky bamboo Growing Tips

Lucky bamboo is known to bring luck and positive energy to the carrier. Most likely you've seen these lovely stalks in water display containers at a local store for mass selling. Lucky bamboo as a house plant is one of the most striking and surprisingly one of the most easy as well. As long as you follow some very simple, logical planting rules whether you're using water or soil as a growing material.

Pick out a few sturdy looking lucky bamboo stocks from that sales display. Look for the stalks to be a healthy green color, no yellow or brown on the stalks at all. Check to be sure that the leaves sprouting from the top of the plant stalk are looking healthy as well. You'll glance at the roots as you separate a few stalks, making sure there is a good number of healthy looking roots attached and importantly that the base of the stalk where those roots are growing is firm and not squishy.

Now you need a container for your lucky bamboo plant. Depending on the length and width of the stocks you chose there are quite a few interesting and lovely to look at options. A tall clear vase with some aquarium pebbles, or small marbles in the bottom looks lovely. A short ceramic pot filled with small rocks would be a sturdy home for your lucky bamboo.With vase or pot chosen, simply fill an inch or so at the bottom of your container with pebbles, marbles, or small rocks. Put your stalk(s) of lucky bamboo in the container on top of them, then carefully add some more medium another inch or so around the stalk to keep it firmly in place. Add some bottled water to the container, filling to just above the line of your pebbles, marbles or small rocks.So with some simple care instructions, the task of growing lucky bamboo to be happy good luck to you and your home.

GROWING BAMBOO

As with any plant, a bamboo must first be chosen with your climate in mind. Factor in the amount of sun you have and the lowest temperature your area usually experiences. The plant descriptions gives the hardiness of each bamboo listed.

Then, decide if you want a running (spreading) or a clumping bamboo. Bamboo spreads by extending rhizomes, modified underground stems. Clumping bamboos will spread several inches a year; running bamboos can spread many feet or yards a year.

Both running and clumping bamboos can be used for screens or specimen plants. Running bamboos will fill in much faster, but in some situations and locations, must be controlled. As the spread of running bamboos is rapid,they are ideal for groves or screens. Many are also handsome as specimens plants.

Clumping bamboos, beautiful as specimens or hedges, are (with the exception of the very hardy mountian Fargesias) principally tropical, or semi-tropical bamboos. Bamboo Growth

Bamboos are capable of phenomenal growth. On hot days, they say, you can “hear the corn grow”in the Midwest. Just so, I’ve been told of warm spring days in China when the Moso sprout, leaf, and reach toward the heavens with such vigor, it is audible to my customer’s ears. While withholding judgment on both claims, I will say I have seen bamboo grow to twenty feet in a northern Massachusetts' month.

The bamboo stores food in its rhizomes (horizontal underground stems) and culms (canes). Your newly-planted bamboo will take a few years to become well-established and build these stores. Expect a few new culms the spring after the bamboos are planted, and probably double that number the following spring. After about three years, you will see the growth for which bamboos are known. In about three years a Phyllostachys will fill an area of 5' by 5'. But don't expect mature height at that time.

Growing Bamboo in the Landscape

To plant bamboo outdoors, dig a hole as deep as the container and twice as wide. Add a mix of half compost and half soil to the hole, leaving space for the plant. Don’t add fertilizer or manure. Place the plant in the hole roughly matching the soil level with the level of the material around the plant. New shoots are delicate—be careful. Water thoroughly.For the first year, bamboo should not be permitted to dry out. If the leaves roll up, forming tubes, it is much too dry. Fertilize in March, June and September with high nitrogen fertilizer. Turf fertilizer, or the organic equivalent, works well.

How Many Plants Do I Need?

Running bamboos should be planted on 8-10 foot centers - clumping, bamboos which of course fill in more slowly, should be more closely spaced. Remember that it is easier to arrange odd rather than even numbers of plants.

When Should I Plant?

Soil (not air) temperatures above 40°F are necessary for root growth. It gains you little to plant too early in the spring. Here in New England we can plant from late April to late October. All the books will tell you to plant only in the spring. We at Burts are fortunate that our plants can't read. They have been told that 4-6 weeks of that magical 40 °F soil temperature is sufficient time for bamboos to establish before winter.

Growing Bamboo in Containers

Choose a mix with good drainage and a pot that is at least as wide as it is tall.If you are growing the bamboos interior plant,Most bamboos will do well in shallow containers, eighteen to twenty-four inches deep.

If you are planting bamboo on a roof or high-rise patio, be aware of the challenges such a site presents. Wind and temperature extremes must be addressed if you expect survival and vigorous growth. Plan on a planter at least two feet wide, wider in windy locations, particularly for taller bamboos. The planter should be lined with solid (styrofoam) insulation. Two inch thickness is about right and will minimize rapid freeze-thaw cycles in the winter and excessive heating in the summer.

While the bamboo is actively growing, feed monthly with a full-strength high nitrogen fertilizer. We use a 17-6-12 slow-release fertilizer, but a soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or Rapid-Grow is fine. Bamboo Control

Bamboo control is not difficult. Control is not needed for clumping bamboos. Running bamboos can be controlled in several ways.

Placement near water: Running bamboos will not grow into a pond or stream.
Mowing: A broad (fifteen to twenty feet) mowing strip around a planting, especially in the spring, when the new growth is tender.You will have to mow each year, but the method works.
Barriers: A barrier thirty inches deep (deeper in warmer climates) of a material that will not decompose prevents spread.
An effective variant of this method is to dig a foot-deep ditch around the planting, fill it with mulch, and run a stick through it in the spring and fall to find and remove any rhizomes that might have grown through. This method has become popular with several commercial growers.

Bamboo may be one of the very best candidates for a kind of plant to grow in or outside your home. Bamboo is attractive, can bloom in a multitude of colors (depending on the variety), and, once mature, can survive with relatively little maintenance. It is a good choice of plant for the busy, modern day person - except it's not really a plant. Bamboo is actually a kind of tall forest grass, which is what makes it such an adaptable plant. There are many different kinds of bamboo which are appropriate for specific environments - wet, dry, warm or cold. Picking the right bamboo for your surroundings is very important.

Do not be fooled by the "lucky bamboo" that is sold in some stores. That bamboo, which requires nothing but some water in a vase to grow, is actually dracaena, a very common houseplant. As a side note, you can save a lot of money on lucky bamboo by buying it under its true name. There is a huge markup in the price when it is tagged and sold as lucky bamboo. Real bamboo requires more diligence than the falsely named lucky variety.

Bamboo grows best when exposed to maximum sunlight, although it is often advisable to provide shading for young bamboo plants. Bamboo also needs water, fertilizer, and protection to grow to its fullest, just like any other plant. You need to give your bamboo as much love and attention as your other plants.

Bamboo should be planted in a rich, organic soil. If your soil is too heavy, you might want to add mulch. The mulch should be placed around the bamboo at a thickness of about two inches. Good sources of mulch for growing bamboo include grass, compost, and manure.

Bamboo thrives best in warmer climates. If you live in a climate where it is reasonably warm year-round, then you can just about plant your bamboo any time you want. However, if you live somewhere with cold winters, you should plant the bamboo early enough in the year to allow it to harden before winter arrives. A layer of heavy mulch can also help bamboo survive a cold winter environment.

One thing to keep in mind about bamboo is that it is a running plant, meaning that it has roots that spread out, often destroying nearby plants and animal habitats. For this reason, it is often recommended that a barrier be placed up to 30 inches in the ground to block the spread of roots. When bamboo roots encounter obstacles while expanding outward, they will grow downward, looking for a new way to go. That is why the barrier needs to be so deep.

Bamboo can also be grown in a pot, although it requires more care and attention. For example, in a pot, bamboo can get too dry or too wet because it lacks its own access to soil in the ground. Bamboo grown in pots does not tend to grow as well as bamboo in the ground.

Young bamboo plants should be watered liberally, as much as every day during the summertime. More mature bamboo requires less watering. Also, young, thin bamboo stalks may need to be tied to a stake or some kind of sturdy object to prevent wind damage.

So, yes, bamboo does require some work, especially in the beginning - way more than your lucky bamboo. But it is definitely worth the effort to introduce such a pleasing and unusual plant to your home.

While bamboo is a tropical grass, many different varieties have appeared in the continental United States, particularly in regions not known for being tropical. While bamboo is readily available in swampy, tropical zones of Florida, bamboo is found all over the southern states.
The bamboo variety that is popular in the southern states is commonly known as the fishing pole bamboo, or Golden Bamboo. It's golden colored stalks and leaves lend to its name, as well as the fact that in the south, Golden Bamboo is used for fishing poles. There can be no doubt that Golden Bamboo has been responsible for a majority of fish caught in the southern United States.
Golden Bamboo can grow up to thirty feet tall, a mid size variety compared to its cousins. The first bamboo cultivated within American borders, tobacco farmers to prevent wind erosion on their crops utilized Golden Bamboo. Golden Bamboos strength and durability made it a fine choice to block wind from crops.
Japanese timber bamboo is one of the most common types of bamboo around. Its strong durability makes Japanese timber bamboo a great candidate for larger projects. It is the variety most commonly utilized in construction, from home construction to erosion prevention. The timber bamboo is also quite a delicacy, offering a very nutritious and delicious addition to any meal.
Yet it is the Moso bamboo that is the most commercially used type of bamboo. It is used in everything from paper products to home construction to landscaping.
