Bamboo has been around for a long, long time and it's uses have been wide and varied. From ancient times right through to modern day, bamboo has fascinated people with it's versatility.

From flooring to window shades; from fishing rods and clothing - bamboo amazes with it's varied and wide range of uses. A case study close to home: my neighbor decided he wanted to create some extra privacy to his home when an apartment development bordered his property. I suggested a row of bamboo along his fence line and he took my advice. Within a few short months, he had a thriving hedge of bamboo plants creating the privacy he was after. Problem solved.

In many parts of the world bamboo provides the raw materials in people's day-to-day lives. These days, industry is also making use of bamboo, particularly in the construction area; house-frames, walls and roofs... you name it and bamboo can more than likely be adapted to it. What about music? Bamboo instruments have been making music right around the world; flutes, fiddles and drums, just to name three.

Some bamboo variety can shoot to 35 to 40 meters in height making them the largest grass species in the world. Some varieties will spring to just a half a meter but short or high, they produce woody perennial stems, a key to their much sought after use.

Bamboo Flooring

In recent years, western society has taken a shine to bamboo flooring. Providing a great finish and known for it's tough qualities, bamboo flooring has rapidly gained popularity during the past decade.

The use of bamboo flooring is catching the attention of environmentalists as an alternative to hardwoods. As a member of the grass family, its rate of growth is faster than most hardwood trees and is seen as a renewable resource. Additionally, the glues used to hold the layers of bamboo flooring together lacks many of the petroleum products used in most laminate flooring, making the materials biodegradable.

Where can I get a bamboo fountain like the one in the snowy garden in Kill Bill?

Remember that fountain that moves, pouring water from a piece of bamboo as the snow falls? I'm in the States, I've checked e-bay and other internet searches. It's probably not hard to make, but I have no skill in that area.

could someone help me Identify a fountain/garden fixture?

A piece of bamboo is hinged on a small post at a T.
It is longer and heavier on one side and because of this it tilts.
Water flows into one side and fills up that side.
That side grows heavier than the other side and tilts and dumps the water into the resevior. When this side drops the other side raises and knocks something, making a "goonk" sound.
These fixtures are sometimes found in Japanese Zen gardens and Ive heard that they are also used as a wildlife repelant. Please help

Look on www.home.ivillage.com/decorating/crafts. They have instructions and supplies need to make your own Bamboo water fountain. Much cheaper, if you can find all the supplies in your area. HGTV did an episode about this also. Very relaxing and lovely garden feature, can be adapted for home or office also. Hope this helps

Anybody knows feng shui?

A year ago my best friend gave one of those good luck feng shui bamboos... I watered it and everything and was perfectly fine UNTIL today I saw that it was YELLOW, excepting the leaf and the roots... I know this plants have a meaning, and I was wondering if anyone knew what couls that mean...

in fengshui, plants are placed in a specific location for specific purposes, like there is a location to make you better in your studies, though the technique is not the same for all houses. then there is a location based on the year, meaning it changes every year, and effect also changes. this year, if you put the plant in the east most part of the house, you will be more sociable or attract people into your life. if you put them at the southwest most part, you will celebrate life. but only do these, if the part is not a bedroom or a toilet.

regarding your plant going yellow, in fengshui it is important to keep the plant, fresh and healthy, if it became yellow and dying, it means that it absorbed bad chi in it, and must be replaced with a new one.
