Bamboo – From Flooring To Blinds To Clothing…It’s So Versatile

Bamboo has been around for a long, long time and it's uses have been wide and varied. From ancient times right through to modern day, bamboo has fascinated people with it's versatility.

From flooring to window shades; from fishing rods and clothing - bamboo amazes with it's varied and wide range of uses. A case study close to home: my neighbor decided he wanted to create some extra privacy to his home when an apartment development bordered his property. I suggested a row of bamboo along his fence line and he took my advice. Within a few short months, he had a thriving hedge of bamboo plants creating the privacy he was after. Problem solved.

In many parts of the world bamboo provides the raw materials in people's day-to-day lives. These days, industry is also making use of bamboo, particularly in the construction area; house-frames, walls and roofs... you name it and bamboo can more than likely be adapted to it. What about music? Bamboo instruments have been making music right around the world; flutes, fiddles and drums, just to name three.

Some bamboo variety can shoot to 35 to 40 meters in height making them the largest grass species in the world. Some varieties will spring to just a half a meter but short or high, they produce woody perennial stems, a key to their much sought after use.

Bamboo Flooring

In recent years, western society has taken a shine to bamboo flooring. Providing a great finish and known for it's tough qualities, bamboo flooring has rapidly gained popularity during the past decade.

The use of bamboo flooring is catching the attention of environmentalists as an alternative to hardwoods. As a member of the grass family, its rate of growth is faster than most hardwood trees and is seen as a renewable resource. Additionally, the glues used to hold the layers of bamboo flooring together lacks many of the petroleum products used in most laminate flooring, making the materials biodegradable.

In addition to the strength and durability of bamboo flooring it is also being promoted as being more resistant to insects such as termites, which for some reason are not naturally attracted to this grassy growth.

I have a 2 pole shade in the cornice above my french doors. One is an off white honeycomb shade that covers the glass portion the other is material that spans the window.

With the faux leaded behind it it allows me to mix several looks and alter them according to my whim. Most of the time I leave both up with a hint of the cloth beneath the cornice. When dining in the daytime the honeycomb defuses the light. For formal dinners the Damask adds elegance.

Roman shades question?

OK, new house we bought has replacement windows that look great. One problem the way they were installed I can not put the window treatments I like (roman shades and the bamboo shades with a valance built in) inside the window when installed. I have never seen these hung outside the window. Will they look ok like that or do I need to go with another type of window treatment?

Actually, yes, you can hang them outside the window sill. However, because there is a frame that the shade retracts into there will be a slight gap where the shade overlaps the window edge and it will have an elevated appearance as it will project outside the window frame. If you can't mount inside the window frame any treatment you use will not be flush with the window edge, so I recommend you use what you like most.

Bamboo curtains over windows inside room for cooling purpose?

Do using bamboo curtains over windows "inside" the room help in keeping the room cool? The bamboo curtains are like the one shown in the following link

Does anyone know how to cut Bamboo Roman Shades? What type of saw, etc?

I have purchased 72" x 72" Roman Shades for my Florida Room that I am doing. Problem is that it is an old house and all the windows are different, ex: 67", 60", 69", etc. I need to trim each blind to fit and need to know the best way to go about it. What type of saw? Would a circular saw work, or a table saw etc?

How do I remove an oil stain from my cherry wood night stand?

I recently bought one of those scented oil thing's with the bamboo stick diffusers. I left it on my night stand one night, not thinking, and in the middle of the night, knocked it over. It spilled in a puddle underneath a book I had sitting there, and when I woke up, I immediately smelled and saw the damage. I quickly tried to remove the book, which resulted in tearing up the cover, and removing a huge section of varnish. Now I have a book with a ruined cover that's cherry colored, and a night stand that's sticky and stripped of it's beautiful finish. =( I am a college student and this furniture was a gift and supposed to last me the next few years! I feel like crying! I've used "Simoniz Fix It! For Wood" in the dark shade, which I ordered off TV, with no success! Someone please help me!

okay so i have casement windows(i think thats what you call the windows that have the screen on the inside and the crank to open the windows...anyway..Im wondering if there would be anyway possible to mount wood blinds or would bamboo shades look better? I REALLY don't wanna use plain jane aluminum mini blinds...just keep in mind theres really not a way to mount them inside.....

Either one would work. A blind affords you the ability to control the light better. You can mount your blinds outside on the casing. And yes, your windows are called casement. They also sell short stem replacement cranks should you want to change them if you go the shade route and you have long stems. If you live in a humid environment you may want to consider faux wood blinds to prevent warpage.

Hi, The widest I've found them here is 96" http://www.windowshadesblind.com/bamboo-roman-shades.html If you are set on bamboo you could always use two blinds or have some panels cover the side where there is a gap. Hope this helps.
