What about music? Bamboo instruments have been making music right around the world; flutes, fiddles and drums, just to name three.

Some bamboo variety can shoot to 35 to 40 meters in height making them the largest grass species in the world. Some varieties will spring to just a half a meter but short or high, they produce woody perennial stems, a key to their much sought after use.

Bamboo Flooring

In recent years, western society has taken a shine to bamboo flooring. Providing a great finish and known for it's tough qualities, bamboo flooring has rapidly gained popularity during the past decade.

The use of bamboo flooring is catching the attention of environmentalists as an alternative to hardwoods. Bamboo can be a difficult plant to care for because it likes a lot of water.  I've had a few bamboo plants, and learned a lot through trial and error.  Here are a few great ways to care for bamboo in your house and keep that little bamboo plant alive and thriving. 

Put your bamboo plant in a nice pot.  This pot can be either with water and rocks, or full or dirt.  Water the pot at least twice a week.  Even if it's planted in water, you will need to refill it once a week or so.  If it’s planted in the dirt you may need to water more frequently.  Don’t water everyday though, that could cause root rot. 

Ensure the plant gets a nice amount of sun.  Bamboo, like all plants, needs good sun exposure to be able to grow.  Don’t expose the plant to direct sunlight, but keep it in a brightly lit room—just not in the window seal.  If you expose it to direct sunlight it might burn the plant. 

To properly care for bamboo in your house it’s important to fertilize your bamboo.  The best fertilizers are those with a high nitrogen content. Fertilize your bamboo plant once a month.  This will ensure that the pot or water it's in has all of the nutrients that the bamboo needs to grow.

Another great way to care for your bamboo is to give it a nice little layer of mulch.  This will trap the water and give your bamboo a good place to draw water from when it gets thirsty.  The Mulch can also help keep the temperature stable.

Bamboo is a great indoor plant that can be grown in your home. Bamboo plant is easy to care, grow and it is great for interior spaces with dim natural light Bamboo is no more just a plant from China and favourite food of Pandas but it can also be used to brighten up your home!

Get a healthy bamboo chute for growing bamboo indoor as houseplant. Bamboo can be grown from cuttings and it is also propagated from Rhizomes. Rhizomes should be planted in large containers. In bamboo the basic varieties are categorized as clumping and running which describes the growth of the plants. Clumping Varieties are best for indoors.  

Place your bamboo chute in a transparent container, transparent glass, and small pot or jar so that you can see the roots growth clearly. Fill the containers with decorative stones like adding pebbles, glass marbles, or stones to the container.

Keep you bamboo in two -3 inches of the stem submerged in water. Unlike other plants bamboo likes to take root in a few inches of water constantly in order to grow and to be healthy. Do not over water but replace the water routinely. Place your bamboo in a place where it can receive filtered or partial sunlight.

Clumping varieties can be grown indoors using soil. Get a large container with adequate room for these fast growing plants. Make sure you place your plant giving enough space: at least two inches between the edge of the root ball and the side of the containers. Make holes in the bottom of the container for drainage. Bamboo likes loose and rich soil that drains well. Use plenty of peat moss and other loose medium partially with soil. Plant the rhizomes an inch deep in the container. Water thoroughly and keep the soil moist. Place the plant in full or partial sun.  

Feed your young bamboo plant regularly, consistently and lightly during the growing season. Nourish the bamboo with fertilizer which is high in nitrogen with low potash. You can also use balanced NPK fertilizer for your bamboo plants. Bamboo is a fast growing plant they need rich nutrient to grow. Mix the fertilizer into the soil and water the bamboo once in every week to ease the absorption of the fertilizer. As the Bamboo plant starts to mature, it does not need much fertilizer.

You can also grow bamboo in hydroponics systems. Without soil you can use standard potting mix containing bark, peat, perlite, vermiculite for hydroponic growing.

Bamboo is a wonderful plant. Still many people fear planting it because they multiply and grow too fast. However, there is good news. Now there is a whole new range of noninvasive clumping bamboo plants that is easily available.

I have many reasons why your garden, yard, or even the parking space outside the house should have a bamboo plant. The article discusses some of them.

To save the bamboo

The bamboo multiplies very fast. In addition, there are hundreds of varieties of bamboo. Still, "half of the world species of bamboo are threatened to be extinct" says a United Nation report. To keep the environment clean and balanced, it would be a great contribution if people start growing bamboos domestically.

To save the environment

All the plants are kind to the environment. But bamboo stands out. When compared to the hardwood trees, the bamboo releases 25% more oxygen and absorbs more than 4 times the carbon dioxide. So having bamboo plants in the home ensures that one is offsetting at least some of the carbon footprints. The bamboo can also be used to make fishing rods, poles, skate boards, floors and many other crafty and decoration items, which will be a part of an eco-friendly living.

To have plantings in tight spaces

Bamboo is one of the few plants that do not take up much space. Many varieties of bamboo multiply at a very fast rate. However, this problem can be solved by regular pruning of the roots. Another way to discourage multiplication of the bamboo plants in the tight spaces is to grow them in containers. The bamboo grown in a container will not be as hard as the one grown in the ground but it can remain as healthy and as beneficial as the one grown in the ground when properly taken care of.

A simpler solution is to choose the clumping bamboo plants. They are a clear winner among all the varieties when plantation is to be done in tight spaces.

To have evergreen plantation

The bamboos are evergreen plants. Another interesting fact is that bamboo renews its leaves in the spring. In the spring season new leaves sprout, the old leaves become yellow and keep falling for days. So, anyone who likes fall should have the bamboo plants to have a fall-like experience in spring.

Bamboo is a group of perennial evergreen plants in the grass family called Poaceae, sub family Bambusoideae. They are capable of growing in a rapid manner. They grow up to 100 feet tall. Bamboo is used to make chairs, tables, walking sticks, paper, fences and for so many purposes.

There are two methods for growing bamboo trees. They are clumping (sympodial) and running (monopodial). Their growth depends upon the soil and climatic conditions. The rhizomes which are called as underground stems are used by the plant to spread into different areas. Runners extend to some meters while Clumpers stay at one place. Bamboos with small leave require lot of water and vice-versa. Once the plant is fully grown it will require less amount of water.

There are different kinds of bamboos based on the region like tropical, sub tropical, temperate, and mountain. A lot of humidity is required by tropical, sub-tropical and temperate bamboos.

By planting Bamboo in appropriate place and supplying lot of water can help it flourish. Fertilization is necessary for the plant to grow in a energetic manner. Lawn fertilizer is used which is good in nitrogen. The formula is 21-5-6. Organic fertilizer even though it is costly is used because it has good quality nitrogen.  Around the bottom of the plant 2 to 3 inches of compost or organic manure, which is the natural source of plant food. Composted cow manure can be used as a fertilizer which does not cause any bad smell.

Dig a large space around the plant and place it deep into the ground it order to make certain that it is very well rooted and can stand stubborn during  strong winds and hurricanes in sub-tropical regions.

To fertilize one bamboo plant one gallon of half strength solution of high nitrogen liquid fertilizer is mixed before watering the roots.

High nitrogen granular fertilizer should be spread around the base of the plant which is about 2 feet from it. Use the garden claw to cultivate it till the top-inch of the soil. Care should be taken not to cultivate deeper to avoid injury to the roots.

1 to 2 inches of compost should be spread around the base in a circular manner of about 18 inches from the central stalk. Use garden claw to cultivate till the top-layer of the soil in case of finished compost. But in case of   half – finished compost just spread it on the surface like mulch for allowing it to decompose.

Start the process of fertilization during the first week of august and don’t delay it as it will affect the growth before cold season, in case of bamboos in temperate regions. Whereas bamboos in tropical and sub-tropical areas the process of fertilization should be carried out through the rainy season. Stop it during dry season and then start it again when the rain commences.

As with any plant, a bamboo must first be chosen with your climate in mind. Factor in the amount of sun you have and the lowest temperature your area usually experiences. The plant descriptions gives the hardiness of each bamboo listed.

Then, decide if you want a running (spreading) or a clumping bamboo. Bamboo spreads by extending rhizomes, modified underground stems. Clumping bamboos will spread several inches a year; running bamboos can spread many feet or yards a year.

Both running and clumping bamboos can be used for screens or specimen plants. Running bamboos will fill in much faster, but in some situations and locations, must be controlled. As the spread of running bamboos is rapid,they are ideal for groves or screens. Many are also handsome as specimens plants.

Clumping bamboos, beautiful as specimens or hedges, are (with the exception of the very hardy mountian Fargesias) principally tropical, or semi-tropical bamboos. Bamboos are capable of phenomenal growth. On hot days, they say, you can “hear the corn grow”in the Midwest. Just so, I’ve been told of warm spring days in China when the Moso sprout, leaf, and reach toward the heavens with such vigor, it is audible to my customer’s ears. While withholding judgment on both claims, I will say I have seen bamboo grow to twenty feet in a northern Massachusetts' month.

The bamboo stores food in its rhizomes (horizontal underground stems) and culms (canes). Your newly-planted bamboo will take a few years to become well-established and build these stores. Expect a few new culms the spring after the bamboos are planted, and probably double that number the following spring. After about three years, you will see the growth for which bamboos are known. In about three years a Phyllostachys will fill an area of 5' by 5'. But don't expect mature height at that time.

Growing Bamboo in the Landscape

To plant bamboo outdoors, dig a hole as deep as the container and twice as wide. Add a mix of half compost and half soil to the hole, leaving space for the plant. Don’t add fertilizer or manure. Place the plant in the hole roughly matching the soil level with the level of the material around the plant. New shoots are delicate—be careful. Water thoroughly.For the first year, bamboo should not be permitted to dry out. If the leaves roll up, forming tubes, it is much too dry. Fertilize in March, June and September with high nitrogen fertilizer. Turf fertilizer, or the organic equivalent, works well.

How Many Plants Do I Need?

Running bamboos should be planted on 8-10 foot centers - clumping, bamboos which of course fill in more slowly, should be more closely spaced. Remember that it is easier to arrange odd rather than even numbers of plants.

When Should I Plant?

Soil (not air) temperatures above 40°F are necessary for root growth. It gains you little to plant too early in the spring. Here in New England we can plant from late April to late October. All the books will tell you to plant only in the spring. We at Burts are fortunate that our plants can't read. They have been told that 4-6 weeks of that magical 40 °F soil temperature is sufficient time for bamboos to establish before winter.

Growing Bamboo in Containers

Choose a mix with good drainage and a pot that is at least as wide as it is tall.If you are growing the bamboos interior plant,Most bamboos will do well in shallow containers, eighteen to twenty-four inches deep.

If you are planting bamboo on a roof or high-rise patio, be aware of the challenges such a site presents. Wind and temperature extremes must be addressed if you expect survival and vigorous growth. Plan on a planter at least two feet wide, wider in windy locations, particularly for taller bamboos. The planter should be lined with solid (styrofoam) insulation. Two inch thickness is about right and will minimize rapid freeze-thaw cycles in the winter and excessive heating in the summer.

While the bamboo is actively growing, feed monthly with a full-strength high nitrogen fertilizer. We use a 17-6-12 slow-release fertilizer, but a soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or Rapid-Grow is fine. Bamboo Control

Bamboo control is not difficult. Control is not needed for clumping bamboos. Running bamboos can be controlled in several ways.

Placement near water: Running bamboos will not grow into a pond or stream.
Mowing: A broad (fifteen to twenty feet) mowing strip around a planting, especially in the spring, when the new growth is tender.You will have to mow each year, but the method works.
Barriers: A barrier thirty inches deep (deeper in warmer climates) of a material that will not decompose prevents spread.
An effective variant of this method is to dig a foot-deep ditch around the planting, fill it with mulch, and run a stick through it in the spring and fall to find and remove any rhizomes that might have grown through. This method has become popular with several commercial growers.

The Tropical Plants refer to plants grown in the region casually called 'Tropics'. Most of them are comfortable around the Equator.

But now Tropical plants are at home in any climate...
Nowadays , more and more gardeners in all climates are introducing themselves to tropical plants with great results, and several species of sub-tropical plants are being grown , even in the coldest parts of the globe..Mainly different varieties of Palms which include Umbrella Palm (Cyperus alternifolius), Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) and Mediterranean Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis)...They are ideal House plants grown in containers...

There are others like the Hibiscus,Split-leaf Philodendron, Jasmines which need to be protected during extreme cold weather.
They need to have the right kind of soil to grow, generally a mix of 3 parts of potting soil, and 1 part of sand and peat. The other important factor while growing tropical plants in cold climates is to use warm water during winter...ideally around 50° F...

Tropical plants tend to grow lush when kept in a place with lots of sunshine and air circulation, on a window sill if the plant is small, or close to an open window where it gets enough sunshine and breeze.

SOME TIPS FOR GROWING TROPICAL PLANTS

A Well dug up, thoroughly loosened soil is absolutely essential for tropical plants. For a plant to produce good growth above the ground, it must have a strong and well-developed root system below the ground. Basically, plant growth is directly proportional to root growth. Roots cannot grow in hard ground, and this is particularly true of Tropical plants or for that matter all plants.

A thick layer of organic mulch is absolutely essential for several reasons. First of all it reduces evaporation of water from the soil thus reducing the amount of watering needed and it conditions and enriches the soil as it decomposes.

Growing tropical plants in containers/pots is practical, as, when the weather dips below 50 degrees at night, the container/pot can be moved in to your Garage, Basement ,  Living room or  wherever convenient.

Always make sure that they are at no time overwatered, leaving the pot dry is better than overwatering which leads to the roots rotting and eventually the plant dies.

Remove all dead leaves, flowers and make sure that there are no pests or fungus on the plant..

Fertilizing is most beneficial in the spring, but you may need to lightly fertilize all year around once a month or more if needed.

Some tropical plants that can be easily grown in any climatic conditions include most variety of Palms, Bamboos, Gardenia, Jasmine with its fragrant blooms, Citrus Plants, most varieties of Hibiscus flower plants, Lantanas with their colourful blooms in various shades ranging from Orange, Yellow, Purple and White...and Bird of paradise with its sculptural and Majestic Orange and bright Blue blooms.
Tubers like Ginger can be grown very successfully indoors in tubs in cold climates or can be planted directly into soil in warm humid climates.

With some simple amount of care and patience tropical plants grow wel, and they'll give you years of pleasure...
