Not necessarily. Dreams often communicate feelings. The pictures that accompany dreams can be and are at times just that, pictures, not reality. Dreams are communication from your deeper self to your awake self, but there is a deeper meaning to the dream that is only represented in the dream. Dreams are communication like a movie.

I suggest that at some point, or many points, in your childhood, you were baddly scared, scared to the extent that your dream is communicating this troubling image. Your subconscious is communicating a feeling you had but not the actual situation because as a child, a very young child, you could not remember the precise events. Kids don't interrupt or remember events like adults do.
So your subconscious interrupts the feelings you are having with your dream or accompanying dream in an effort to remember and understand the events which lead to these feelings.
I once awoke in the morning and was feeling like I killed someone and buried them in the backyard. It was a bad feeling, with heavy guilt and shame. But I also remembered as I woke up that I had never killed anyone, really. So it was a dream. But, I did understand, in time, at that time I was feeling the guilt and shame of having done something terrible, very very terrible, that as a kid or very young child, I was not capable of doing or understanding.
So what could have happened that was terrible or seemed so terrible back when you were a small child?

Maybe a sign of an absence of love and cuddling. I can remember myself being scared to death at shadows and noises.
Or it may really be a dream about abuse, child abuse in one form or another. Maybe, no joke, you had a terrible scare of your imagination which was not followed often enough by a loving hug or loving and constant tender handling.
