Outdoor lighting designers use many different techniques to get the effect that the owner is looking for in their garden. This can be accomplished in different ways, such as the light source and its positioning and whether the light is aimed down or up, or even washed across a surface. Other techniques will use a spotlight in the garden to give a focused glow, a soft ambient background or even brilliant sparkles at play on water. These are the techniques from which to choose for the different parts of your yard or garden. Its this combination that results in your outdoor lighting design or system.

There are two techniques that are the primary methods from which most lighting systems will come from with small differences creating different effects. These two techniques are Downlighting and Uplighting.

1. Uplighting

The simple definition for Uplighting is just that, lighting thats coming from underneath or below something and aimed upwards. Some types of uplighting are mirror lighting, silhouetting, and shadowing. In the garden uplighting provides a focal glow bringing emphasis to an area or object. This technique is the dramatic lighting of an outdoor lighting plan. You can think of it as the spotlight in a play or theater or even searchlights crisscrossing the night sky. Rarely seen in nature, uplighting gives your garden a somewhat unnatural look or appearance, demanding further investigation. Due to it being a dramatic unnatural lighting effect you will want to use it sparingly. Some places where it does fit well in a lighting plan is when you have a large tree or statute that you want to bring attention to in a not-so-subtle way. Uplighting can also be spectacular in seasonal settings such as in the fall and directing light up through the branches of a tree hitting the orange and red colored leaves.

2. Downlighting

Just as it sounds, downlighting is all about the lighting source being up high or at least higher than the object you are trying to illuminate below. This technique uses multiple types of lights for multiple or different purposes. For instance one light source might be a floodlight for general lighting for safety or entertainment, like a basketball court or an area of the yard where a wedding reception is taking place. It may not be one large floodlight but three or more smaller floodlights set in a tree. It could be filtered light that is used when creating the effect called Moonlighting. This effect is achieved through the lighting being diffused through a stretched canvas or a globe.

Downlighting also can be focused using accent lighting or spotlighting effects to bring out or emphasize plants or a small area in the garden. If done well, downlighting will imitate or resemble nature, just the opposite of the uplighting technique. It can be made to look like the morning sun gently striking the patio with its first light or even a focused shaft of light shining through the clouds on a gray day. Then there are those times when you would love to have a full moon for your special outdoor occasion or garden event. You now have that ability by using the moonlighting effect at will.
