Betta with live plant?

Little Serotonin Maui-Wowie Finn seems to love his glow in the dark plant, but I'm worried that it may cut one of his fins (the edges seem sharp and it's plastic not cloth). So last week, I was with a friend who suggested that I get some bamboo to add to his tank, saying he could eat off the roots and it would help his bowl clean (yes, i know, my poor fish is in just a little one gallon bowl, and once summer comes and i can move Andrei into the twenty gallon I plan on putting Serotonin in the ten gallon). But in my research I heard that bamboo creates a BIG mess and can sometimes cause a betta to get ill... What sort of plant would you recommend? & I do apologize for adding in useless information. i wouldnt starve him to death, that's just crazy. & he has a heater, chill.

Bamboo form craft stores is usually okay but live bamboo isn't. Betta's DO NOT eat the roots of plants but may nibble at algae or leaves from time to time. They are mainly carnivores so should be fed meat based products such as mosquito larvae, blood worms and Betta pellets. You can defiantly (and I highly recommend) adding live aquatic plants such as those found at the fish or pet store. These will cleanse the water and help aerate it too. Try some java moss, java fern or polysperma as these are all very hardy plants.
