* How well do you know your Orchid? Become familiar with your Orchid. Do some research and find out if your Orchids of thrives better the up in the air, down in the soil or a height in between. Your research will let you what elevation your orchid needs. Epiphytes, for example, are air-loving orchids that derive most of the nutrients necessary for their sustenance from the air. Terrestrials, on the other hand, derive their nutrients from the soil, and as such, are best left clinging to the ground. If you didn't do your homework you might not have known this, which would have disastrous effects on your Orchids.

* Lights Please: Not all Orchids are alike. Different orchids need different amounts of light. Some varieties, like Dendobriums, demand very bright lights. Other varieties, like Phalaenopsis that we mentioned earlier, can be grown with artificial light. If you want to have a blooming Orchid you need to know how and where you will keep them.

* Nice and Healthy: It is important that you keep the soil healthy at all times. Orchids, more than any other plants, demand the highest quality soil. Keeping healthy stunning orchids will require regular fertilization. There's no substitute for this. If your soil is not the best your Orchid will not survive.

* Don't drown them: How often do you water Orchids? There are no hard and fast rules. It all depends: the season, compost and local conditions all affect watering frequency. Rainwater is preferential to tap water and should be warmed to the same temperature as the plants.

* Orchids need air. Enthusiasts have been saying it for years but in a way, Orchids are like humans. They'll choke with stagnant air. Make sure that their habitat is properly ventilated, but not too much, as this could ruin their blooms. When the weather allows, open vents or windows will give your plants the fresh air they need. In the greenhouse small electric fans can be used to move the air around and help keep leaf temperatures down in hot weather. Orchids, however, like humidity, and open vents or windows will dry the atmosphere. In the greenhouse water can be sprayed onto the floor and on the staging between the plants to raise humidity.

Outdoor lighting designers use many different techniques to get the effect that the owner is looking for in their garden. This can be accomplished in different ways, such as the light source and its positioning and whether the light is aimed down or up, or even washed across a surface. Other techniques will use a spotlight in the garden to give a focused glow, a soft ambient background or even brilliant sparkles at play on water. These are the techniques from which to choose for the different parts of your yard or garden. Its this combination that results in your outdoor lighting design or system.

There are two techniques that are the primary methods from which most lighting systems will come from with small differences creating different effects. These two techniques are Downlighting and Uplighting.

1. Uplighting

The simple definition for Uplighting is just that, lighting thats coming from underneath or below something and aimed upwards. Some types of uplighting are mirror lighting, silhouetting, and shadowing. In the garden uplighting provides a focal glow bringing emphasis to an area or object. This technique is the dramatic lighting of an outdoor lighting plan. You can think of it as the spotlight in a play or theater or even searchlights crisscrossing the night sky. Rarely seen in nature, uplighting gives your garden a somewhat unnatural look or appearance, demanding further investigation. Due to it being a dramatic unnatural lighting effect you will want to use it sparingly. Some places where it does fit well in a lighting plan is when you have a large tree or statute that you want to bring attention to in a not-so-subtle way. Uplighting can also be spectacular in seasonal settings such as in the fall and directing light up through the branches of a tree hitting the orange and red colored leaves.

2. Downlighting

Just as it sounds, downlighting is all about the lighting source being up high or at least higher than the object you are trying to illuminate below. This technique uses multiple types of lights for multiple or different purposes. For instance one light source might be a floodlight for general lighting for safety or entertainment, like a basketball court or an area of the yard where a wedding reception is taking place. It may not be one large floodlight but three or more smaller floodlights set in a tree. It could be filtered light that is used when creating the effect called Moonlighting. This effect is achieved through the lighting being diffused through a stretched canvas or a globe.

Downlighting also can be focused using accent lighting or spotlighting effects to bring out or emphasize plants or a small area in the garden. If done well, downlighting will imitate or resemble nature, just the opposite of the uplighting technique. It can be made to look like the morning sun gently striking the patio with its first light or even a focused shaft of light shining through the clouds on a gray day. Then there are those times when you would love to have a full moon for your special outdoor occasion or garden event. You now have that ability by using the moonlighting effect at will.

General Information:

The Java Rice Bird is also known as the Javan Finch, the Paddy Bird, the Paradise Sparrow, the Java Sparrow, and the Rice Munia. Due to habitat loss and hunting and trapping for food and the caged bird trade, this finch has become uncommon within its native range.

Physical Description:

It is about 5.5 inches in length and weighs around 20 g. Its head, rump, and tail are black, and its back, wings, and chest are gray. The cheeks are white, and its beak, legs, and eye rings are pinkish to red in color. The sexes are similar in appearance, although the male's beak is slightly larger and its eye rings may be a bit deeper and redder. Juveniles are dull gray in color with blackish beaks. Several color mutations of this bird exist, including white, cream, and fawn.

Diet:

It mainly feeds on rice when available, but being omnivorous, it also eats other seeds, grains, fruits, insects, and even bamboo shoots.

Habitat:

The Java Rice Bird occurs on grasslands and open woodlands, and has also become accustomed to habiting in cultivated areas and along human settlement. Due to its affinity towards occupying, and subsequently feeding off of, rice paddies, this bird has become a pest creature in the eyes of many. It is a resident breeder in Java, Bali, and Bawean in Indonesia. It is known to nest in trees or buildings.

Reproduction:

Breeding season coincides with the rice crop harvest. The female usually lays 4 - 6 eggs per clutch. Both parents incubate the eggs, but only the female incubates them at night. Incubation lasts about 14 days, and fledging occurs approximately 21 - 30 day after hatching.

When I lived in West London, we had blackbirds, robins, sparrows, thrushes, magpies and blue-tits.

I attracted the blue-tits with a peanut feeder.
They seemed to just like the peanuts in the red bag and I hung it outside my bedroom window well out of the way of cats.

If you have lots of cats around, they may be keeping the birds away.

Birds like their feeders to be near some trees or bushes so if threatened, they can go for cover.

You could try some of the dried meal worms you can buy for birds.
That might attract birds like blackbirds.
The sparrows (if you still have any near you, they are scarce in some places now), like mixed wild bird seed.

It is important that you recognize where your stress starts, or what certain situations or people will get you stressed out. After I spoke with Rolf Baginksi, the great bamboo rod maker form Germany, he gave me the following advises before buying a vintage cane rod:

1. Check if all parts are present. If the original rod had THREE pieces then you should not get TWO pieces!

2. Are the two (or three) pieces of the old bamboo rod equally long? If not, the tippet was probably broken and was replaced.

3. Do the pieces insert well together? The inserted pieces should not move. The ferrules should be in brass or nickel silver (an alloy made of copper, zinc and nickel). Don't ever trust any tin-zinc ferrule.

4. Is the rod more or less straight? It's normal for antique rods to have a little bending in the upper part. This can be adjusted by a bamboo rod maker. But don't ever buy very flexed and/or twisted rods.

5. Are all bamboo strips still glued together? If not, the purchase is not worth it

6. Is the finish still ok? If not,i.e. if the varnish is much deteriorated, it must be removed, snakes and guides removed,too and then the varnish re-applied. A lot of work which can be expensive eventually.

7. Are the rod maker's name and line size still readable? It can be that the rod was repaired (lowering the value of the rod as a result), but it can also be that the signature has simply worn out (without the rod loosing of value for that). Check carefully.

8. Are all the threads wrappings ok? When you lightly touch them you can feel and notice if the guide is still well attached to the rod. If not, wrapping can be easily repaired

9. How is the condition of the handle? Was the handle retouched, sanded down or has the original condition being maintained? A good quality fine cork handle can be renewed with a 220 grit sanding paper.

10. Does the reel-holder still make it up? Try and put a fishing reel in the reel-holder and see if it still holds it! Moreover, do rod and reel match together?

11. Try it! Fly-cast with the rod with the proper line inserted! Not only. Try also with a line one size higher and one size lower. Sometimes the indication written on the rod is wrong and you should fish with a higher size line. On the other hand, some very old rods can have signs of "fatigue" but you can still fish with them very well if you use a lower size line!

I'm not a wood carver but I knew one years ago in East Texas and I remember asking him that very question. For fine detail carving, the best wood is the densest. You'll need to find what's available in your area but what he liked was dogwood and mesquite. If I'm remembering correctly he liked teak and mahogany when he could get it cheaply.
I also remember this; When carving dense wood your cutting tools, knives, chisels etc. have to be very sharp. He spent many hours just sharpening tools.
