Chinese starter recipes can be a great option whether you are catering for a dinner party or a buffet. You can serve a Chinese starter recipe before any main course cuisine and you might even want to serve a Chinese starter before a traditional western main meal.

Examples of tasty Chinese starters recipes include spring rolls, prawn crackers with a homemade dipping sauce, wonton soup, chicken and sweet corn soup, Chinese stuffed mushrooms, steamed dumplings and more. More Chinese Starters Ideas

There are lots of vegetarian Chinese starters you can make. What about homemade egg rolls or spring rolls with cabbage, mushrooms and bean sprouts inside or vegetarian dumplings?

Stuffed mushrooms or zucchini work well and you can use spiced rice as the filling. Chinese chicken wings are great at a buffet and you can add Chinese ingredients like water chestnuts, oriental mushrooms or bamboo shoots to any salad recipe to give it a flavour of China.

Recipe for Chinese Crepes

These tasty crepes are filled with spring onions, black bean sauce, fresh coriander and more for an authentic Chinese flavour. Use fried wonton skin or fried pork rind to make a crunchy filling. This recipe makes one Chinese crepe, so double it as many times as necessary, making one crepe at a time.

You can find these crepes on Chinese street corners, cooked fresh to order, and they also make a great starter before any kind of meal. They are hot, flavourful and spicy without being too spicy. If you prefer a mild flavour you can leave out the chili sauce.

You will need:

1 tablespoon black bean sauce

2 tablespoons soy milk

2 tablespoons millet flour

1 teaspoon water

1/2 teaspoon chili sauce

1/2 spring onion, sliced

1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil

2 small square crackers

1 tablespoon torn fresh coriander leaves

1 beaten egg

Cooking spray

How to make them:

Whisk the soy milk with the vegetable oil and millet flour to make a batter. Add a teaspoon of water if it is too thick. Stir a teaspoon of water into the black bean sauce. Mix another teaspoon of water into the chili sauce. Put these two sauces to one side.

Spray a frying pan with cooking spray and heat it over a moderately low heat. Pour the batter into the pan and spread it so you get a thin crepe. Cook it for a couple of minutes or until firm, then pour the beaten egg over it. Cook it until the egg sets. Sprinkle the coriander and spring onion slices on top, pressing them into the egg.

Flip the crepe over and spread the chili sauce and black bean sauces on. Put the crackers in the middle, leaving 1cm of space between them. Flip the top third of the crepe over the crackers, then fold the bottom third up. Double the crepe over so the crackers are on top of each other. Serve hot.

Is it ok that my bamboo cooking spoons leave a weird taste in my food?

It may just be that they were cheap, but they leave a bit of a wooden taste on my food when I use them (My eggs this morning for example :\ )

I would throw them away. It sounds like some of the glue (or whatever is used to hold them together) is getting into your food and into your body. I have bamboo cooking spoons also and they don't do that to my food.

I really like the sage green we have like a mint green in our living room and it looks great our carpet is burgundy so it matches very well. Any light spring type colors will go well. Pale yellow maybe. Or like a carmel type color.

The color schemes in your home are the key to making it somewhere that you really love spending time, but that doesn't mean that you need a monochrome color scheme with no character. These whimsical color schemes can help you turn a so-so house into a creative place to live and play.

Choosing Your Colors

The most important thing to remember when choosing your color scheme is that your personal preferences are going to be far more important than what anyone else has to say. If you prefer red and orange tones, then that should be a focal point for your colors. Ah, the power and the glory of yarn! When you step into a yarn shop, are you overcome with all the splendid colors, fibers, textures and yarn fumes? Does your head spin as you finger skeins, pet them, weigh them, drown in color, or dream of possible projects? You may fall so deeply in love with a yarn, you can't wait to cast on with it for your next sweater. But will this yarn do what you envision? Will you match the right yarn with the right project? Consider these five crucial tips.

1. Wrong Fiber?

2. The four basic types--protein, cellulose, cellulosic, synthetic--have different qualities. Protein means animal hair: sheep, alpaca, goats, rabbits, yak, buffalo and such. This gives us everything from angora to scratchy rug wool. Most wools are springy and have memory, good for nice stretchy ribbing. Alpaca? Not so much, but drapes well. Their scales trap air and absorb water for great comfort while wearing. Silk, in a class by itself, feels warm in winter, cool in summer. Cellulose comes from plants. This includes cotton, flax and hemp for everything from crochet thread to rope. Cotton feels cool in summer, but heavy, droopy, inelastic and some knitters find it hard on the hands while knitting. Cool, hard-wearing linen and hemp soften with repeated washings, have no stretch at all and feel scratchy to knit.

Bamboo shares many of cotton's qualities with a lighter weight. Cellulosic comes from plants and trees, broken down into a chemical slurry that's extruded into long strands like a spider makes his silk. This includes rayon and Tencel. New fibers like soy, corn and others appear on the market these days, great for wool-allergy folks. Synthetics are entirely man-made and include polyester, nylon and acrylics. This gives us everything from rope to fun fur. Synthetics can be machine-washed and dried, which is great for blankets, afghans, or toys. These include workhorse acrylics, showy fun furs and a million varieties of specialty textures. They can feel less comfy because they don't absorb moisture, but they won't rot or mildew. Blends of these four fiber types can share their great qualities and downplay drawbacks. Wrong Yarn Preparation?

3. Wool can be spun worsted for a shiny, sturdy yarn or spun woolen for a softer, cushier yarn. The fiber in yarns can be dyed before or after spinning, sometimes bleached or left the natural colors, hand-painted, kettle-dyed or a million other methods. Lighter colors show stitch definition better than dark colors. Solid and semi-solid colors work well for highly textured designs as they don't confuse the pattern. Multi-colored yarns can make the simplest knit look not-so-simple. For a garment worn near the face, choose colors that work well with your skin tone. The right color makes you glow--the wrong color, no matter how well-knitted, could make you look ill. Wrong Yarn Spin?

4. Multistrand means single plies are spun one direction, then singles are twisted together the same direction to form yarn. Did you ever notice the left leg of your knit stitches looks skinnier than the right in stockinette? That's a multistrand yarn. Cabled yarn has singles spun one direction, then singles are twisted together the other direction for a balanced yarn. Wrong Ply Combination?

5. Single ply can feel soft and plush, but pills. Two-ply can make great lace as it spreads stitches open. Three-ply makes round yarn that's great for socks and gives cables extra dimension. Yarns with even more plies have more strength, less pilling. Yarn spun into cobweb laceweight behaves well for airy shawls. Sock weight, DK and fingering weight yarn makes a splendid yarn for socks, hats, baby items, mitts, tights, scarves--you name it. Worsted weight works great for sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves, heavy socks, slippers, afghans, blankets, bags--either felted or not--and so much more. Bulky weights create heavy sweaters, coats, hats, scarves and slippers. Danger: Slippery When Wet?

Some fibers are weaker when wet. Some stretch or grow when wet. Dry clean only? Hand wash and lay flat to dry? Machine wash and dry? Each yarn comes with its own care instructions which may affect your choice of what pattern or garment you knit. How many sweaters and socks have become gigantic or miniature through the wrong laundry method? Don't discover this the hard way.

The right yarn at the right weight, knitted into a pattern that shows off the yarn's finer qualities can last for years of happy use. Dianthus (pinks & carnations) are an extremely popular garden perennial with it's popularity being due to the amazing array of beautiful blooms which they produce. All pinks and carnations are suitable for use as a cut flower in flower arrangements but he best are florists' or perpetual carnations (the ones you see guys wearing in their buttonholes at weddings), unfortunately these plants are not suitable for growing outdoors.

Pinks are usually grow much smaller than carnations and are scented. Some types of pink flower twice in a season, once in the summer and again in autumn. The single flowers range in colours and types, they are carried on fine stems, have five petals which overlap slightly. Flowers are split into four classifications of self, bicolour, laced and fancy. Self coloured pinks are of a single colour while the others are of mixed. Bicolour flowers have a patch, of a darker colour, at the base of each petal and in laced flowers this base is extended in a strip along the edge of each petal. Fancy flowers, as the name implies, are more elaborate with richly decorated petals which have speckles or stripes of a contrasting colour.

Carnations are much larger dianthus with border carnations (dianthus caryophyllus) growing up to 90cm (3ft) in height. Like pinks, carnation flowers have four classifications which are called self, fancy, picotee and clove. Self and fancy are much the same as for pinks but picotee flowers have a white or yellow ground colour with each petal having a margin of a different and contrasting colour. The classification of clove refers to the fact that these flowers have a fragrance of cloves as their appearance is widely varied being single coloured or a combination of differing colours.

Popular Species of Dianthus

Dianthus x allwoodii a popular modern pink which grows up to 15cm (15in) high.

Miniature pinks grow up to 15cm (6in) high.

Dianthus alpinus is a rock pink which grows up to 10cm (4in) high.

Dianthus arenarius a pink which grows up to 30cm (1ft) high.

Dianthus x arvernensis pinks which grow up to 15cm (6in) high.

Dianthus deltoides (pinks) grows up to 23cm (9in) high.

Dianthus gratianopolitanus, syn. D. caesius a pink which grows to a height of around 10-30cm (4-12in).

Dianthus neglectus a pink which grows to a height of between 10-23cm (4-9in).

Dianthus plumaris, from which most old-fashioned pinks are developed, grows up to 38cm (15in) high.

Dianthus caryophyllus (carnation) grows up to 60cm (2ft) in height.

Cultivation and Propagation

Pinks and carnations are pretty easy plants to grow with carnations requiring a little more attention than pinks. Dianthus prefers a neutral to alkaline soil that is well-drained. Pinks and carnations should be planted, in shallow holes, in spring or autumn in a sunny site. Some of the larger plants will require bamboo canes for support. If your pink is not developing side shoots pinch our the growing tip in mid spring. Pinch out flower buds on the flower stems of carnations to ensure that flowers only appear at the top. Feed pinks in spring but carnations are best left and removed after 2 years.

To increase carnations layer towards the end of summer and, after about 8 weeks transplant into the garden as they should be well rooted. To propagate pinks take side shoot cuttings and grow in cold frames until they are well rooted. Dianthus can be grown from seed but seedling show variation. Sow seed in late spring to early summer.

Problems

Aphids can attack all parts of dianthus with most damage being caused by root aphids. Aphids on the stems, leaves and stalks leave a sticky residue. Pinks and carnations suffer greatly if left to grow in poorly drained soil which is allowed to remain too wet as crown rot is likely to develop. In damp, humid conditions exist, and where the plants are overcrowded, plants can develop leaf spots. Dianthus can also suffer from a covering of a fine white powder called powdery mildew.

Do wood fence posts need to be set in concrete if the fence is small, and not in the wind?

I am building a bamboo fence on my patio, only about 6-7' long, 5' high. I am doing a picture frame with split bamboo in the center. I am planning to have two end posts and one in the middle. It is really more cosmetic than anything (covering up an AC unit). Do I have to pour cement around the posts, or is there an easier way? Also, with such a small fence, how deep do I need to dig to install the posts? All advice is welcome, I have never built a fence before and want to keep this as simple as possible. Thanks!

With a 5' high fence you certainly need to set them in concrete. Posts are 5' 6' and 8' you wiil require 8' posts 3' of which will be in the grounds. It wouldn't last 5 mins otherwise. You would probably get away with it on a 3' high fence.

The list can go on forever, I have had great luck with the above plants and can normally be bought at Lowe's, Home Depot & some markets. Lowe's & Home Depot have had the least expensive & biggest selection without going to a nursery. Just make sure that the plant you chose is a healty specimen.

I'm guessing the bamboo umbrella as that is the obvious item that should be on the set, however they also had sewing machines, dishes, ingredients to make coconut cream pie, lots of clothes and so on, quite a bit really for a 3 hour tour.
