Bamboo Orchids – In Full Bloom

It's well documented that bamboo arrangements can add beauty and a nice decorative touch to any home. For some though, who haven't explored bamboo as a decorative alternative, images of long stalks or even sticks, are their first impression. Well, if you're really wanting to spruce up your home environment with appearance and a lovely fragrance, think bamboo orchids. Bamboo orchids, which grow in warm climatic conditions, are just the thing to give your home a special lift. These pretty plants can grow to about 5-6 feet in height. Their stalks are pseudo-bulbs and a new one is produced every year. Sobralia, a species of bamboo orchid, can grow in light shade as well. However, it usually doesn't grow to over 4 feet. They generally require a temperature range of between 40-80 degrees and rarely grow in cooler climates unless they are restricted to indoors. Bamboo orchids bloom in summer and autumn. Their habitat includes areas in south-east Asia and the Pacific Islands. The bamboo orchid has been introduced to countries such as Puerto Rico and Costa Rico.It's actually not a bamboo as such but an orchid. Bamboo orchids need to be kept moist.They appreciate humid conditions and it's suggested if you keep them indoors, keep the room humidity at about 50 per cent.Fertilizing about once every two to three weeks with a diluted solution may prove beneficial. Not only do they produce a pretty flower but bamboo orchids are also fragrant. The flowers produced are lavender in color with a yellow throat and lavender lips. Bamboo orchids will certainly enhance it's surroundings especially when flowering. If you can get them, they will make ideal gifts.
